Connecticut Resource Conservation Development Area     |     CT     |     2017
Project objectives included the creation of a pilot project in CT with two hubs or locations where purchased equipment was to be housed by a hosting farm and used cooperatively by the farms in the surrounding area. The primary area of consideration was Soil Health. This is due in part because of CT RC&D's experience in managing the Soil Health Initiative in partnership with USDA NRCS since February 2011 and because of the interest from farms who want to do soil health using organic methods. The concept of using equipment attachments to a tractor or four wheeler rather than using pesticides is nothing new, however it is underutilized in Connecticut. By implementing this pilot project CT RC&D allowed more agricultural producers to implement no-till and cover crop on their farms, increasing soil health. That project had an additional goal of reducing the use of herbicides and the runoff from them to the surrounding water systems. With two hubs of equipment usage it allowed other types of producers to see the equipment in action and be better informed about implementing such type equipment at their farm of similar or larger size.

The goals are to enhance the toolkit for engaging landowners in stewardship planning and accelerate landowner adoption of conservation practices. Our objectives are to demonstrate, replicate, and disseminate methods and supporting materials for integrating high-resolution remote sensing (LIDAR imagery) —particularly publicly-available LIDAR—with new mobile inventory technologies to deliver rapid assessments of family forest properties.

This project grew the mushroom Stropharia Rugosoannulata over woodchips coming from the landscape industry in Philadelphia to decompose in short term. Mushrooms were harvested and organic matter produced used as amendment for vegetable production.
