The project aimed to demonstrate the impacts of no-till systems with cover crops on soil mositire by: 1) Evalauting the basic soil health indicators that are impacting soil mositure under no-till and cover crops and compare to no-till w/ no cover crops, 2) Assessing the economic benefits of cover crops and no -till systems, and 3) Demonstrating to producers the benefits of no-till system and cover crops on soil moisture, water infiltration, soil health and crop yield.

Reducing the soil moisture loss rate is a function of increased soil organic matter. As farmers use and incorporate conservation tillage practices into their operations, soil health is improved as a result of increasing organic matter. One of the benefits and the main focus of this project is to demonstrate that the use of conservation tillage can help the soil profile reduce the rate at which the moisture is lost during the growing season. To demonstrate this concept, operating fields using both conservation tillage and conventional tillage will be monitored using soil moisture probes to record the amount of soil moisture and enough data will be collected to allow the calculation of a rate of soil moisture loss during wet and dry soil conditions.

The project will evaluate four objectives: 1)The effect on soil quality parameters of each of 13 plant species with promising use as cover crops in two tropical
soils 2) Evaluate three mixtures of a combination of four cover crop species and two planting densities on soil quality parameters in two tropical soils 3) Provide farmers, through field days and workshops, an on-site learning experience on the use of cover crops. 4) Prepare a Cover Crops Guide for Soils in Puerto Rico using the most promising plant species evaluated.

This award was to assist VDOF in achieving its goal to produce containerized longleaf pine seedlings in largescale quantities to meet the needs of restoring the critically important longleaf pine ecosystem which nearly became extinct in Virginia. VDOF has established a native Virginia seed orchard and this seed source, coupled with a large-scale containerized seedling operation, will meet the needs of landowners for the restoration of this diminished species. Longleaf pine seedling planting requires containerized stock to be successful with acceptable rates of survival. The specific objectives of this project are: (1) - Grow longleaf pine containerized seedlings at VDOF's Garland Gray Forestry Center in large quantities, up to 500,000 seedlings annually, for planting to restore this diminished species ecosystem, and (2) - Provide technology transfer to agricultural producers, landowners, and others, both for sharing containerized operation production information and to promote longleaf pine restoration.

To install low cost hydrologic sensor networks in the field of collaborating farmers. Sensor data will be logged onsite, transmitted to online servers via wireless telemetry, and displayed on a graphic user interface where farmers can log in through a password protected webpage and monitor current field 79 conditions and control irrigation equipment, during the project, we will interact with producers on multiple occasions to gather feedback on the systems performance and usability.

This project aimed to learn more about the best approaches to establishing the under and middle story components of a forest. The goal of this project is to add a component to forest health evaluation by assessing the forest understory and middle story layers where grass, forbs, and shrubs grow. Establish best seeding mixes and/or shrub plantings to fill in shaded areas that need a stronger under- and middle story component to offer better habitat and protect soil, especially on sites treated with chemical control for ivy and Early Detection, Rapid Response priority weeds such as garlic mustard.

Water Resources Monitoring Group proposes to address challenges identified in prior testing, enhance the capability of the hardware, and evaluate the new prototype hardware under varying field conditions. The intent is not only to reduce the cost of hardware associated with edge-of- field monitoring; but also move toward offering a fully integrated intensive monitoring program. An integrated monitoring program will include: turn-key hardware and software solutions that are easy to install and operate, provide standard protocols for installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment; and provide training and education on monitoring methods and procedures to ensure transparent and consistent results across monitoring projects.
