The purpose of the proposed project is to refine existing environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques designed to detect and monitor rare, cryptic, and/or invasive species. eDNA is becoming widely used for detecting the presence of rare, cryptic, or invasive species. However, sampling is inconsistent and there are no known protocols for comprehensively sampling a stream or watershed. The project will target brook trout on the Lake Creek system in order to limit populations to promote Bull trout. Deliverables, development of comprehensive protocol for sampling eDNA for detection of rare and invasive species in a stream reach or watershed.

NRCS has developed two Conservation Activities that establish recommended equipment and protocols by which to conduct edge-of-field water quality monitoring. Conservation Activity Code 201, Edge-of-Field Water Quality Monitoring Data Collection and Evaluation, sets forth guidelines for the monitoring design, collection and analysis of data. Activity Code 202, sets forth requirements for system installation and equipment requirements for edge-of –field monitoring. Implementation of these two Conservation activities is expensive and highly technical and may deter participation by producers in edge-of-field water quality monitoring. ECCD proposes to develop less expensive and more producer-friendly sampling methods that will provide similar data as that provided by the established NRCS Conservation Activities, Codes 201 and 202, governing edge-of-field monitoring.

Determine how often SAFE projects are successful in establishing native forbs and grasses.Determine how seed mix design, seeding rates, equipment used for seeding (grain drill vs. native seed drill), timing of seeding (fall vs. spring), age of seeding, seedbed preparation (mechanical vs. chemical), post-seeding management practices (mechanical vs. chemical), and competition from existing and invading weed populations influence plant composition of CRP-SAFE projects to inform land managers about what SAFE management practices are successful at creating quality habitat and what management practices fail. Another objective is to evaluate CRP-SAFE fields by estimating demographic rates of grouse occupying a CRP-SAFE landscape in Power County Idaho where both CSTG and GSG occur.
