This project, in partnership with two other CIG Classic projects, to improve the accuracy and transparency of soil-test-based fertilizer recommendations by updating decades-old phosphorus and potassium recommendations and developing an unbiased decision-support tool that will be available for use by anyone involved in nutrient management.
FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY     |     FL     |     2022
Urban agricultural (UA) production is increasingly coming under pressure due to its nutrient-intensive and often nutrient-inefficient practices which are resulting in excessive N and P pollution in urban regions. While nutrient use efficiency, conservation of soil and water resources, has been a focus of research in rural agriculture, it has received little attention in UA. Hence, this project will evaluate and implement various innovative conservation practices such as cover crops, crop rotation and agricultural monitoring through sensors and remote sensing. These short-term changes in soil properties will be evaluated and related to broader concerns of nutrient cycling, reduced runoff and leaching, improved crop yield and growth.

This project will create biochar from biomass generated from four highly invasive tree species that are targeted for removal across the Island, including haole koa (Leucaena leucocephala), strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum), albizia (Albizia julibrissin), and dillenia (Dillenia suffruticosa). Biochar created from these invasive feedstocks will be evaluated for quality and applied onto twenty test plots located in five different eco-systems on Oʻahu (Kahaluʻu, Pālolo Valley, ʻĀhuimanu, Pupukea and Kunia).

This project will develop an innovative method to manage invasive ants that form mutualistic relationships with crop pests. By integrating biocontrol (positive sense single-stranded RNA virus, +ssRNA), chemical control (liquid boric acid bait), and a revolutionizing delivery system (biodegradable alginate hydrogel), we produce a novel and sustainable ant management tool targeting bigheaded ants in agriculture, as the efficacy of boric acid hydrogel baits and the horizontal transfer of the virus identified among the ant colonies have been demonstrated in preliminary trials.
AMERICAN FARMLAND TRUST - Franklin Cereal Rye CC     |     KY     |     2022
This project will eliminate financial risk when producers adopt winter crops that provide more cover. The approach is three-fold: 1) paying producers a market rate for integrating winter cereal rye into their rotation; 2) creating a revolving fund restricted for 1st and 2nd year producers; and 3) catalyzing local buyer markets for rye through scaled adoption of cereal rye cover crops and market outreach.
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND - Needleman Precision Cover Crop     |     AL, FL, KS, MD, MN, MO, NH, NC, SC, VT, VA, WI     |     2022
The project will merge precision (variable rate nitrogen applications) and sustainable (cover crops and reduced tillage) agricultural practices by expanding an existing cover crop nitrogen calculator to include a geospatial platform. The innovative, enhanced precision cover crop nitrogen calculator will provide in-field variable nitrogen fertilizer recommendations to growers and estimates of greenhouse gas reductions from improved nitrogen management with cover crops.
COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY     |     CO, NE, WY     |     2022
Plains region, a vital region for the U.S. beef production. This project will result in a pilot inset market for CO2-equivalent (CO2e) reduction for two key segments of the beef value chain: stockers and cattle feeding operations. Emissions-reductions will be evaluated holistically to understand the production costs, benefits, and tradeoffs associated with achieving them.
