 To develop, test and validate an Internet of Agriculture (IoAg) Network and Service Platform that will provide precision agricultural data to enable farmers to increase crop yield, minimize cost, reduce water usage, and improve conservation of natural resources and environment. The primary work will be accomplished in the Grand Prairie Region of Arkansas where an extensive amount of work and investment has been made in automating on-farm data acquisition, data transfer, and control systems. One common problem with all data sensors is the communication and data transfer system that is either expensive and/or not compatible with other systems making it difficult for growers or organizations to collect and utilize field resource data critical to their operation.

The benefits from cover crops can be enhanced when targeting some functional aspects of cover crops. Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) belongs to the legume family and it is an organic nitrogen producer while rapeseed (Brassica napus) is a member of the brassica family and accumulates glucinolates in tissue. Glucosinolates are sulfur compounds known for their effectiveness on suppressing soil pathogens and parasitic nematodes. A mixture of the two functional cover crops would benefit row crop operations through supplying low-input organic nitrogen fertilizer and natural soil pathogen preventive. One concern related to cover crop cultivation is termination of cover crop growth before row crop planting. Incorporation or chemical burndown are the commonly applied practices known to be effective in suppressing cover crop. A three year field trial will occur at an EQIP participating producer’s location to evaluate/ demonstrate the benefit from legume/brassica cover crop applications and cover crop residue management. The detailed project goal is to quantify potential benefits from the projected cover crop application practices on soil health parameters such as soil physical/ chemical properties, soil pathogen suppression, and crop productivity.

The purpose of this project was to offer NRCS and communities a set of digital tools they can use to discuss, understand and educate on natural dynamics in areas of environmental value to stakeholders and the public, around a given site in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and to create speculative models of intervention while visualizing the effects they may have in the future. This project offered an initial tool for scientific personnel and the general community to be able to communicate natural cycles and soil-related events through graphic, time-based simulations and visualizations.
