This project will demonstrate that alley cropping can contribute to the financial and conservation success of arable farm operation.

There is growing need for management techniques to improve soil health on dryland range systems, and organic amendments have been promising for improving soil health and plant productivity in multiple environments. However, in New Mexico, comparisons of compost, biochar, and bale grazing have not yet been undertaken. Understanding costs and equipment needs and learning how to monitor and assess outcomes for each are needed before local ranchers will begin planning for their implementation.
Rockingham CCD     |     NH     |     2020
This project will address the unique and changing pest control needs of NH fruit and berry growers. Growers, experts, service providers will work together on research and education, and financial and technical support will be provided to growers.
Soil & Water Conservation Society     |     IA     |     2020
The SWCS will work to support agricultural retailers to engage producers in on-farm trials that demonstrate the agronomic, environmental and economic incentives for conservation practice adoption.
Sustainable Iowa Land Trust     |     IA     |     2020
This project will research the different USDA programs, private investment opportunities, foundation and other funds available to establish agroforestry in Iowa and the federal, state and local laws that protect such work in the short and long term. The project will provide user-friendly resources to producers and landowners including information on the different kinds of deed restrictions and easements landowners can explore, provide sample leases landowners can use with tenants and potential buyers, a resource guide, and an interactive web page.
The Blackfoot Challenge     |     MT     |     2020
The purpose of this project is to develop and test (2) new drive-over electric mat prototypes designed to be an alternative to traditional swing gates in order to deter grizzly bears from accessing an enclosed area with electric fence. The goal(s) of this proposed project is to develop an effective drive-over electric mat for non-lethal deterrence of grizzly bears that can become an NRCS standard practice for EQIP eligible producers. We hope that by developing and testing a new electric fence mat system, that the practice will have broad-scale applications for ranchers, farmers, and landowners who wish to deter bears from an enclosed area using an existing electric fence.

The project team will work with TSP foresters to demostrate silviculture techniques that are effective in rehabilitating poor-quality forest stands.
Farmers Conservation Alliance     |     OR     |     2020
The goal of this project is to develop a revenue stream from co-located infrastructure that will allow irrigation districts to accelerate irrigation modernization in a manner that provides for water supply, energy conservation, and water quality benefits. The project will demonstrate the potential for co-located conduit and fiber optic lines along new irrigation pipeline projects in Oregon.
Gilliam SWCD     |     OR     |     2020
This project will evaluate and develop innovative methods of inventorying NRCS conservation practices on landowner properties and certifying implemented practices using unmanned aerial systems (UASs). A Technical Note document will be developed to provide NRCS officers and NRCS partners a step-by-step guide to safely and efficiently collect needed in-field information relevant to conservation practice compliance using UAS’s. The Technical Note-Manual would contain sections about UAS image acquisition, regulations that govern flight planning & flight operations, as well as image acquisition, data processing, production of orthorectified images, and certification of completed job-practices (acres treated, linear feet of fence installed, etc.).
Mid Atlantic 4R Nutrient Stewardship Association     |     PA     |     2020
This project seeks to demonstrate that nitrogen modeling programs can be used to quantify nitrogen contributions of soil health practices. This will enable farmers to account to these contributions in their nutrient management plans, allowing fo rreduces supplemental nitrogen application, reduced loss of nitrogen to surface and ground water, and reduced input costs.
